Disappointed with the Sony RDR-VXD655 Oct 18, 2009 I've had this unit now for almost a year now, and here's what I have found:
-- It's very easy to dub VHS tapes to DVD, and end result is good.
-- Playing DVDs or CDs works fine.
-- As others have mentioned, the internal clock loses a few minutes a month or so. The auto feature (synchronized with cable signal) does not work. Annoying.
-- Loading a disk, formatting, finalizing are all slooooooooooooooooooooooow
-- Hate the remote. Editing disk titles or the title list is tedious at best, the interface for doing so is idiotic.
-- Like others, I have returned home to find that an important program that I have recorded on DVD results in "This disc can neither be played nor recorded". This is more than annoying.
-- At random times in the middle of a timed DVD recording a "Copyright Violation" message will appear, resulting in the rest of the program to be completely black and useless. The DVD usually gets broken into a million pieces after that.
-- The motor spins at times even when the unit is turned off. Turning on/off again stops the motor.
Verdict: Piece of junk. I hate it. I can't understand why there are so many positive reviews. I think I know why the unit is not available any longer.
Piece of junk if you want to record tv/play DVDs Sep 17, 2009 Worked great for about 4 months. Then, it refused to finalize recorded discs saying they could not be played or recorded. Then, timer recordings failed, shut itself off in the middle of the 2 hour program. Then, recordings using the record button failed, either stopped recording on its own or wouldn't update disc info properly. Now, even has problems playing purchased discs. If you follow Sony's recommended advice to unplug the unit for one minute and start over, it might work for recording or playing 1-2 discs and than failure again. $114 plus shipping fees isn't worth it to me to fix it. Good it is no longer available new. Don't waste your money and buy it used.

Item damaged in shipping, so cannot review Sep 17, 2009 This item would have been a great item to have, but unfortunately it was damaged in shipping and the seller had to file a claim for damage and we were refunded our money. Thankfully, amazon has a money back guarantee for issues such as these.
Another good machine from Sony Aug 19, 2009 This recorder has met all my expectations. I've been using it since March and have had zero problems.

Ouch.... Jun 18, 2009 I saw that this was unavailable on Amazon so I checked out the Sony site.. On the Sony site they state that this is no longer available.. Too sad, because I've heard and read online that this is a very good product....
