    5Lian-Li V1000 series - No Plastic!  Sep 02, 2007
Wow, what a case. I can't find any plastic on it anywhere! The wheels, power switch, all panels, the hinged drive cover, even the optional camera card reader are all metal.
I've got the V1000BII case, which added a vent and an exhaust fan to the right side cover.

The build quality is fanatical. This can literally be the last ATX case you will ever need, even if you're in your 30's! It is likely to last far longer than the ATX standard itself.

This case mounts a standard ATX mainboard in an inverted position with the CPU near the bottom and the PCI slots near the top. Access is from the Right side cover (opposite usual ATX layout)
I found out the hard way that heatpipe equipped mainboards may not work in an inverted position. My abit AW9D-MAX (heatpiped) northbridge overheated in this case. It was necessary to install an aftermarket NB cooler. Further testing with the heatpipe removed confirmed that it only works in a "normal" orientation, not when upside down.

The cooling is very good as a lot of the case is peforated with tiny holes and the provided fan arrangement does a good job of ventilation without excessive noise. The lower area for the hard drives are cooled by one front intake fan, the PSU area draws in air from below, and the mainboard area has an intake fan that ducts air towards the CPU. The "II" model adds an exhaust fan at the top of the right side cover, and the "W" variant has a window on the RH cover.
Lian does sell spare parts to upgrade non "W" or "II" cases if desired. The included fans are of high quality and make only moderate noise at full speed. They have 3-wire connectors for use with speed-controlled mainboard connectors.

Access to the components is pretty good, especially the mainboard, PCI slots and Hard Drives.

The only things I don't like about this case is the USB/1394/Audio ports. They are inconviently located near the bottom of the case, and the Audio ports do not support HD Audio. I solved this with an Intel front Audio panel attached to a (metal) Lian 5.25" to 3.5" adaptor in the topmost drive bay.

The (metal) wheels move nicely over carpet and even have a parking brake, (also made of metal) This thing was obviously designed by Plasticphobes, and is my new all-time favorite computer box.

    Have fun,
    KeriJane
