    1$1000 Paper Weight  Nov 20, 2009
When it ran, it was fine. Immediately after the 1 yr warranty went out, unit quit. Called HP, want $400 just to look at it. Browsed the internet, the HP dv9000 series has some major problems with the motherboard.
I will not buy another HP. No more money to them.

    1Don't purchase!!  Oct 04, 2009
I bought this laptop in April of 2008. My laptop just crapped out in September of 09, 5 months after my warranty expired. I take care of my computers. I'm a software engineer, and I have a lot of important work on my computers. The same problem that HP acknowledged a long time ago plagues these computers, but HP refuses to fix them. First, my screen went pixelated and then shut down. On reboot, it only comes up to a black screen now. The NVidia GPU and HP quality motherboard died on me. HP acknowledged it was the same problem as the earlier computers had but said it would cost $398 + tax to fix. When you buy a $1700 computer (mine was customized with a better processor and more RAM), you expect it to last several years if you take care of it. I have a $1700 paperweight now.

I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau of Silicon Valley and also signed up for a class action lawsuit against NVidia and HP. Unless you want the same experience, don't purchase this or any other HP. Extremely disappointed.

    1Worst laptop i ever owned  Oct 02, 2009
The display died 20 days out of warranty and customer service was NO help. I am stuck with an overpriced, over-heating piece of junk ...DO NOT buy HP! Look at Toshiba or Sony. I've had much better luck with them.

    1Nvidia Fault  Sep 30, 2009
I bought this laptop in the begging on August in 2008. One year and a month later the screen became full on pixelated colorful lines and crashed. Laptop is now unable to be used and HP will not do anything to fix it even though they know of the Nvidia GPU problem for a few years now, it would cost about $500 to get it fixed. If you want a great laptop I would suggest a Toshiba, Asus, Acer. Dell can even be good since my last one lasted a good 5 years until it fell off my desk =(. Anyways. If you want a reliable laptop do NOT buy a HP. I am currently about to buy a great toshiba that has great reviews and i know a few people with the same one that has lasted years. HP has been selling the same faulty hardware since 2007 and they know its faulty.. do NOT trust them and do NOT give them any of your money on a crappy HP laptop.

    1Time Bomb  Sep 28, 2009
I am writing about my experience with HP products. In my family we have an eleven year old Toshiba and a nine year old Apple, hardware wise these machines continue to function problem free--however dated software is a concern. I decided to purchase a notebook, with the idea that another quality computer would last many years. My son spent a great deal of time in research and we decided on an HP dv9700 CTO. We did see that there "had" been a problem with an earlier series but it had been addressed months before. I purchased the dv9700 feeling confident (4.08). In July (2008) my son discovered an article stating that there was a problem with the Nvidia GPU--indeed HP acknowledged they had been "aware" of the issue since 11.07. Yet they continued to sell computers containing the same defective GPU. With that information we have been babying this machine in the extreme, rarely using it and never using it for its intended purpose (for fear of sensitive information being left on the HD when it dies). Those actions will undoubtedly place the machine outside of any time frame HP would consider--but that does not matter as HP maintains this series does not have a problem (even though it uses the defective Nvidia GPU). As I understand it if one is fortunate enough to get a "repair" (warranty or customer paid) the part will be replaced with another of the defective parts, instead of (at least) offering a discount on a computer without the problem GPU. Both I and my son expected much more from HP--we thought (after research) that an HP would last (like an Apple or Toshiba). This machine will fail on that account, and is a time bomb. I feel betrayed by HP.
