My fourth, but possibly my last HP notebook Oct 10, 2009 The DV4z (1000CTO) is a real loser. It has some of the same problems as my previous HP notebooks, but plenty of problems unique to it too!
I received this notebook as a warranty replacement for a *much better* HP Pavilion DV system (also, 4 times the cost just five months before getting this one!). I'm angry with HP for offering this as a comparable unit when only the basic specs are the same (same HD capacity, for example, but totally different manufacturers). I'm even more angry with myself for accepting the offer without investigating what they were offering first. I was traveling at the time the customer service guy seemed so honest...(famous last words).
My biggest problem with the notebook is that my DV4z runs very hot. VERY hot. I mean, really dangerously hot! My notebook is almost a year old, and I've never been able to use it without a cooling pad. The two times I've tried were disastrous. The first time, I accidentally mistook it for a 'laptop' and I burned my lap. Literally. The skin is still mottled today. There is a scorch mark on my wooden desk to honor the second time.
But the problems go on. The computer acts like it goes into hibernation without warning about four times a week. It may be related to heat, but I'm not sure. And hibernation only happens part of the time. Other times, the screen goes black but it's just the monitor; the computer is sometimes still on. Sometimes, a hard shutdown in necessary though (along with subsequent data loss); and sometimes, I can shut the lid for five minutes and come back to a working computer once it has cooled down. It's not a connection to the LCD screen. It's not a dirty fan. It's not a dead fan. It's not a display driver. Although, speaking of the display: another known problem is that Vista isn't recognizing the correct monitor every time. HP says to keep uninstalling and then reinstalling your monitor and manually selecting the information every time it's deleted, which is often. However, the two problems seem unrelated in timing.
More negatives: My screen is nowhere near as vibrant is it was on my previous DV Entertainment notebooks (one was in the 2600 series, I think; but I'm not sure). And the keyboard Quickplay buttons seem like a nice touch, but they frequently have a mind of their own. Quickplay "play DVD" will pop up whenever it wants. I could be typing away in an important meeting and suddenly my screen will flash black and up pops quickplay! HP says to fix it over and over and over again by reinstalling Quickplay. They say it's unrelated when the Quickplay volume button gets an attitude dnd stays 'red', leaving the sound muted no matter what I say! But HP knows about this problem too, and they have a fix for it. You guessed it...uninstall and reinstall the Quickplay buttons.
The wireless card frequently turns itself off. Note that it's not just a dropped connection-the card turns itself off and you have to turn it back on. Simple fix. You know the drill by now. Uninstall. Lather; rinse; repeat.
I'm sending this back to HP. Of course, they won't do the right thing and give me a computer comparable to the one they were replacing under a WARRANTY, and if history is the appropriate reference here, I'll end up with this back. It'll look fixed and may even stay tht way until my warranty expires in two months, but it'll probably be a nice looking brick in less than a year.
Thankfully, I bought this thing with a credit card that automatically doubles the manufacturer's measly one year warranty. So when it goes for good, as I'm sure it will, I'll be able to switch them this junker for cash to buy a dependable notebook for work travel and the occasional movie.
Sadly, the 'dependable' requirement appears to leave HP out of the running for the first time in a very long time.
Goodbye HP, it's been a long and slow decline, but our relationship is over. You're cheap and I feel used for sticking by you all of these years
Good value, but a few significant flaws Jun 09, 2009 Like other reviewers, we had some problems with the HP dv4z - including a failed Hard Drive and DVD/CD-ROM drive. Thankfully we were still within the one year warranty (purchased December 2008) and were able to get both replaced. Once the warranty runs out, though, I expect some further failures on this computer. For the $600 price tag, though, when it is working, it is a great mobile computer.
Defective Product right out of the box Feb 13, 2009 I had purchased and owned an HP Desktop before and it lasted 2 good years so I thought okay, why not? HP Pavilion DV6000 seemed like a good choice at the time. It lasted 14 months before dying. In those final dying months, the wireless signal started getting weaker in addition to random overheating and lockups. I could partially attribute this to a BIOS update that suddenly caused my PC to no longer start up properly. Then I went online and read the numerous complaints on various forums about the this model. And how people were playing games with HP customer service back and forth waiting for repairs. This is abosuletely ridiculous! How can a company claim to sell a top of the line product and then the defects start showing up. HP admitted that the product has defects and even extended the warranty but when people put down their cash for this laptop they are essentially buying a lemon. Its like buying a used car without looking at the Carfax report first. And yet the company's sales don't dip on this mistake? I realize there are plenty of other laptop companies such as Acer, Sony, and even Dell whose products suffer from either defective parts or shoddy construction but its truly sickening. Its just like Microsoft with Vista and the XBox360. And one of the main reasons why I'm totally weary investing in any kind of new digital technology in the near future. Not interested in owning another $1700+ clunker!
DV6000 Jan 27, 2009 My mom bought me this computer for my birthday about six months ago, and I haven't had a single problem any of the other reviewers mentioned. It's been a great computer. Especially for the price.
