Passable for a budget enclosure May 12, 2008 If you're looking for a cheap enclosure for occasional use, the Coolmax HD-211-U2 isn't a bad product. It's small, and something vaguely resembling sturdy, and will accept pretty much any notebooks-sized PATA (IDE) drive.
A truly nice touch is that Coolmax includes a screwdriver perfectly suited for installing the hard drive and assembling the enclosure. No digging through your junk drawer for that jeweler's screwdriver. Coolmax also includes a special USB cable in case you have some freak power-hungry drive. If the bus power from one USB port is insufficient, you can plug into a second USB port for more juice. The extra plug will be an annoying vestigial organ for most users, but if you need it, you need it--Coolmax doesn't expect you to carry a power adapter with your portable drive as some other enclosure manufacturers do.
Beyond that, though, you're getting what you pay for with this inexpensive enclosure. The back panel is insecure when putting the drive together, the included carrying pouch is useless at best, the fit and finish is so-so (the location of the screw holes on my unit made it difficult to reassemble), and the simplicity of the design doesn't do much to quiet your drive. If your drive isn't quiet to begin with, this enclosure won't do anything to help--and, in fact, seems to amplify any operating noises from your drive.
On the up side of things, the simple aluminum design also lets the enclosure serve as an enormous heatsink. Installed drives run coolly and happily.
If your computer's primarily a desk jockey, this is a cheap way to hook up extra storage from time to time.
If you're looking for an enclosure for continual on-the-go use, though, I'm just not sure about this one.
Coolmax HD-211-U2 USB 2.0 2.5-Inch External HD Enclosure Mar 27, 2008 Expedited shipping, arrived on time, easy to install, worked like a charm.

Not bad for the price! Nov 29, 2007 I bought this "Coolmax HD-211 Aluminum 2.5'' Hard Disk Enclosure U2" almost a year ago. It works fine with my Windows PC. I this it is a good product for a competitive price.
It's aluminum, comes with a soft case, USB cable, screwdriver, and screws.
I would recommend it.

Works for me. Apr 10, 2007 I have one of these enclosures with a 100GB Hitachi drive. It sits on top of my Mac Mini (OSX 10.4.9). It comes on when I power up the Mini in the morning, then goes off after a few minutes. At 5:01pm SuperDuper! fires up, the drive comes on, and SuperDuper! backs up my internal drive to the Hitachi. After a while the external drive goes off again. I use the provided USB cable which also supplies the power for the drive. The enclosure I have has the Prolific USB chipset, which at one time was not recommended by the SuperDuper! folks, but it seems to be fine (maybe there was a problem at some time in the past, but it seems fixed now).
Mine works fine Jan 14, 2007 I think the product is fine. It works OK with most computers I've tried. However, Windows 98 and 98se do not "understand" USB drives natively. You have to install drivers. I don't blame the manufacturer for that, so the product is still worth 4 stars.
As a side-note, you may find this particular hard drive enclosure to be slightly better than some others, because it can be fully USB-powered. So, no need for a power cord (although one is available, optionally).
